EV Charger Questions Answered | Hexar Solutions
EV Charger Questions
EV charger questions, answered by licensed electricians.
Your vehicle, switchboard, solar system and parking location all affect the right charger. Here are the questions Brisbane homeowners, workplaces and fleet operators ask us most often.
Before you choose a charger
Do I need a dedicated home EV charger?
A standard portable cable can work for occasional charging, but a dedicated AC charger is faster, safer and easier to schedule. Hexar checks the supply, switchboard and cable route before recommending the right installation.
What charger speed do I need?
Many homes suit a 7.4kW single-phase charger for overnight charging. Higher outputs can make sense for high daily kilometres, workplaces and fleets, but only when the vehicle and electrical supply support them.
Do I need single-phase or three-phase power?
Not always. Single-phase charging is suitable for many homes. Three-phase can provide higher charging power and is more useful where vehicles need a faster turnaround or a site has several chargers.
Can my existing switchboard handle an EV charger?
It depends on the available supply, switchboard capacity, protection, cable distance and other loads such as air conditioning, hot water and machinery. We assess those conditions rather than assuming a charger can simply be added to a spare way.
Solar, batteries and smart charging
Can I charge my EV from solar?
Yes. Evnex smart chargers can be configured to use surplus solar generation through Solar Diversion. The charger monitors household consumption and adjusts charging to use available excess solar. The result depends on your solar output, household demand, battery settings and vehicle.
Which Evnex charger is right for my home?
Evnex options include the E2 Flex for grid charging now with solar capability later, E2 Core and E2 Plus for smart home charging, and the X22 for higher-capacity three-phase applications. We match the Evnex configuration to your vehicle, supply, solar system, parking position and future needs.
How fast will an Evnex charger charge my car?
A 7.4kW Evnex charger can add up to about 50km of range per hour for an efficient vehicle. The Evnex X22 can provide higher charging power, including up to 22kW where the vehicle and site support three-phase charging. The vehicle’s onboard charger may limit the actual speed.
Will an Evnex charger overload my home?
Evnex chargers include overload protection and can adjust charging when household demand rises. That protection works alongside, not instead of, correct circuit sizing, switchboard assessment and electrical protection by a licensed installer.
Can an EV charger work with a home battery?
Yes, but the priority and wiring arrangement matter. Evnex Solar Diversion can be configured around a battery system, and we check whether the charger is seen as a household load before commissioning the settings.
Workplace, commercial and fleet charging
How many chargers can a commercial site support?
That depends on the site’s supply and how vehicles are used. For multiple chargers we assess the demand profile and normally consider dynamic load management so charging power is shared without overloading the main switchboard.
What is dynamic load management?
It measures the building’s real-time demand and automatically adjusts EV charging to stay within the site’s available capacity. As building demand falls, more power can be made available to the vehicles.
Do I need OCPP or user access control?
Workplaces and fleets may need remote monitoring, driver authorisation, charging reports, billing or fault alerts. OCPP-capable commercial hardware can connect to compatible back-office platforms. We specify that requirement before selecting the equipment.
Should I install AC or DC charging?
AC charging suits vehicles parked for several hours, such as homes, offices and overnight fleet depots. DC fast charging costs more and is designed for sites where vehicles need a quick turnaround. The right choice depends on duty cycle, dwell time and available supply.
Installation, cost and compliance
How much does EV charger installation cost?
The price depends on the charger, cable route, switchboard work, protection, trenching, mounting and any supply or load-management work. We provide an itemised recommendation after checking the site rather than quoting a charger-only figure.
Can Hexar supply and install an Evnex charger?
Yes. We can recommend, supply, install and commission Evnex smart chargers for suitable homes, solar-connected properties, workplaces and selected fleet applications. We can also assess customer-supplied equipment before installation.
Can the charger be installed outdoors?
Yes, where the charger, mounting, weather exposure, cable route and protection are suitable. Evnex and other outdoor-rated equipment can be wall-mounted or installed on a pedestal depending on the site.
Do I need a licensed electrician?
Yes. EV charger supply equipment must be installed and commissioned by a licensed electrical contractor. Hexar handles the circuit, protection, commissioning and required Queensland compliance documentation.
Not sure which charger suits your site?
Send us your vehicle or fleet details, switchboard location, parking layout and solar information. We’ll help size the charger, identify supply or load-management issues and provide an itemised installation recommendation.
