EV Charger Glossary — Brisbane | Hexar Solutions

The terms we actually use on site, explained plainly. Written by licensed commercial electricians for people planning an EV charger, fleet or workplace install in Queensland.

Glossary

AS/NZS 3000

The Australian/New Zealand “Wiring Rules” — the baseline compliance standard every electrical installation in Australia must meet. Your charger install is certified against it.

RCBO

Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection. Combination device that protects against both earth-leakage faults and overcurrent/short-circuit — the modern switchboard standard for EV circuits.

Type 2 connector

The standard AC charging plug in Europe and Australia. Most Evnex, Wallbox, Schneider and Tesla AC chargers ship Type 2 tethered. Works with essentially every EV on the AU market.

Load management

(Load management system, LMS). Electronics that coordinate several chargers (and the building) so combined load stays under the switchboard/main circuit capacity. Uses a CT clamp to read the live feed, increasing/decreasing charge rate automatically.

CT clamp

Current transformer — a ring that snaps around the main feed cable and safely measures the current flowing. This feeds the data the load-management system needs to throttle charging before the main breaker trips.

Energex approval

For chargers wired above a 20 A single-phase circuit, Queensland’s distributor (Energex) requires a demand-management approval/notification so the network stays predictable. We lodge these for you.
